First Day Of School

When I was a kid, it hurt my feelings so much when my mom would mention that she couldn’t WAIT for us to be back in school. Now that I’m grown with kids of my own, I have no idea how she survived those summers with her sanity intact.

While seeing the bus drive away with my babies inside makes me sad and a little anxious, the sense of relief that washes over me as I step back inside my quiet house is wonderful. I have my freedom back! If I want, I can watch a whole tv show without pausing for nine “emergencies”. I could go shopping without anyone whining and wanting explanations for why they can’t have everything they see or complaining about the radio station or commenting on my driving. Sweet silence!

Maybe I will just celebrate the first day of school with a quiet cup of coffee…. and a nap. Yeah, a nice quiet nap.

Could I do it?

I ran across a blog where a man is dedicated to discarding something everyday.

http://www.ydnar.com/2010/07/less-365.html

Actually, what he said was, “Starting July 1, and every day for a year, I will get rid of something. I will donate, discard, re-gift or recycle some bit of debris accumulating in my house. Anything non-perishable considered, exempting books and music.”

In MY house books should definitely be part of the discard. Hundreds of books overflowing bookcases at every turn. Piles of books I intend to read stacked under my bed, in boxes and drawers, occupying every available space in the house! Hoarding runs in my family and all my life I’ve been in love with thrifting and treasure hunting at the local Goodwill store. So I’m sure I cannot avoid those tendencies entirely. I willingly purge every now and again. I even have really organized friends help me purge cupboards and tiny areas of the house. But it seems like every room of the house seems to still have areas that attract clutter like a giant nuclear powered magnet!

I would love to list my treasures and favorite vintage pieces that I’ve found. But then hubby would see it and demand that I return it. Sooo….that is not an option.

But then again, I keep saying that I’m going to start listing some of my extra treasures on my favorite shopping sites, eBay and etsy. For instance, I found a realllly vintage Pinocchio Head Disney Bank. It even has the stopper. I’m not in love with it. I actually bought it with the intention of selling it. I don’t lack for motivation (I need the cash!). But getting started seems like an overwhelming task. Does anyone have any motivation tips that keep things from getting overwhelming?

Not a problem. I still have panties left.

So yesterday, I found a half eaten stick of butter on the stairs. Someone got hungry and thought that it would make an interesting after-dinner snack. It had a very clear impression of a tiny set of teeth where it had been chewed. (Ewwww!) After eating half the stick, they said “I just thought it was good”.

Then, they had yet another ‘accident’. I think the fourth of the day. (You can tell by the number of discarded pants and panties in the pile that they leave behind next to the hamper in the bathroom.) When I told her that she had to stop having so many ‘accidents’ and just “go potty” before she feels the pee coming, she reassured me, “But Mama, it’s okay. I still have panties left!”

I believe she is missing the point.

Snip! Snip! Snip!

As it is a rite of passage for most kids, it didn’t come as any HUGE surprise when my oldest came running yelling, “MOMMA MOMMA CUPPY CUT HER HAIR! SHE CUT HER HAIR!!!“.

When I was a kid, I was smart enough to cut my siblings hair instead of massacring my own lovely locks. I was pretty smart like that. Plus, I thought she looked great! At the time I imagined my little silver safety scissors with the red rubber grips as being the perfect salon stylist’s tools and that I actually knew what I was doing. Not so completely different from the way I cut my girl’s heads of hair now, actually. I just get away with it a little more smoothly.

Much like my littlest sister’s similar escapade, my little one snip snip snipped her hair off and left it in little curly hunks all over her room. (My sister hid her hatched off hunks of hair under our little brother’s crib.) When my little one was finished with her beauty work, she carefully put the nail scissors back into the drawer they came from. (I thought that was a nice touch. She may learn some stealth yet.)

So, to commemorate this rite of passage and the accompanying trip down memory lane, I’m posting some after-the-fact pictures.

This is the hair in my hand. There was a LOT of it. Below is a very well deserved guilty face. (You can see she also had some fun with a box of tissues which were strewn around the room and underfoot.)

Below is a close-up shot…I think she decided that she was sick of her hair being in her eyes because she cut every that would have been right above her forehead and a couple inches from her hairline. Thank goodness, it is curly hair and it hides a myriad of “beauty faux pas”!

100_0302The girls’ favorite toy right now is this box. Oh yeah, the hi-tech toys occupy them for about 45 seconds and then they go back to playing with the box from the grocery store. I was taking some pictures of them playing and then Bella insisted that I "make a movie, mama! make a movie!". So yeah, there is also a link to a little youtube magic. If you are not related to me, you will likely break your jaw yawning. But as their mom I have to 100_0301 100_0303 say, how cute are they??? *wink*
