Food Poisoning vs. Botulism

While doing a search for food safety, I found a very interesting bit of information. Check this out….

Food Poisoning — This occurs when you ingest food or water that contains bacteria, parasites, viruses, or toxins made by these germs. Most cases of food poisoning are from common bacteria such as Staphylococcus, Salmonella, or E. coli. (It can affect just one person or a group of people who all ate the same contaminated food.) Symptoms from the most common types of food poisoning usually start within 2 – 6 hours of ingesting. Symptoms can include stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, chills, headache, nausea, vomiting, weakness, and serious dehydration.

Botulism — This is is an extremely dangerous form of food poisoning that is the result of ingesting food contaminated with C. botulinun, which is a nerve toxin (scared yet?). How can you tell if you’ve contracted botulism instead of ordinary food poisoning? Botulism causes an impairment of the muscular system. As a result, many people affected with botulism will have trouble speaking clearly, their breathing will become difficult and they may complain of having double vision or other visual problems.(GET TO THE ER!)

While eating meat is quite a bit more likely to cause food poisoning than eating vegetables, the actual muscle of an animal that is consumed is actually very safe as long as it doesn’t have the skin. That is the reason that you can feel safe eating rare steak, but would never eat rare chicken. It is the skin that is the breeding ground for most bacteria. Cutting through the skin during preparation spreads the dangerous bacteria.  The skin actually acts to protect meat from the bacteria that is crawling all over it, but once the meat is sliced, the bacteria races in to invade. (Which is why hand washing is so important. Beware that studies show that long fingernails carry and transmit lots of extra bacteria too, ladies.) After using a chopping board to cut meat, DO NOT use it again until it has been thoroughly cleaned.  NEVER, EVER allow your raw meat to touch  any other food, for that matter. (Beware of hand towels during prep too. Once you’ve used that towel during meat prep, throw it in the wash with some bleach to avoid cross-contamination.)

Sunday night SUM UP…

Not too much going on over here….I’ve had this stupid head cold/flu thing since I woke up on Wednesday morning. My head zone thinks its a cold (sinus ick and using up every kleenax box in the house) and the rest of me thinks it is the flu (achy, whiny, tired, etc etc). Yay.

I’ve done a couple of things that i’ve added to my feelingarty site and wrote up a few articles for the braintrust site that my mom helps write articles for. I can always use a little more art supply money!

Speaking of writing….can you believe how long this writer strike has lasted??? I don’t know about anyone else….but my life has become much richer while it’s lasted. (sorry writers and income-dependant-persons of writers!!)

As much as I miss ‘my shows’, I have been getting way more creative projects done and had quite a bit more quality time cooking and being a housewifey-mom-type person. Granted, most of my tv watching usually happens after the kids go to bed. But all that quiet time has made more time for listening to the radio and trying out new art techniques, reading, using more of my art supplies that I’ve been saving for ‘someday’. You know, actually HAVING A LIFE outside of the lives of tv characters. SAD SAD SAD commentary on my life.

Have you ever noticed when you watch a new show or watch the beginning of a movie and they introduce each new character…… The one who is watching tv always ends up being the loser that has no personality….never the lead character. And if it’s a SCARY movie, the tv watcher ALWAYS gets it first…..along with the guy with the bad hygiene and/or sleezy dating practices.

As per usual, I am sick. This is normal….I am ALWAYS sick to one degree or another (just call me typhoid mary….’cause somedays I say ‘to heck with it’ and I go out in public ANYWAY). A day that I wake up without being swollen, aching, and icky is so unusual that, when it DOES happen, I want to sing and dance because all the world is suddenly a glorious place!

But over the last few days, not only have I been sick (fevers, etc), but my babies too. NOT COOL.

The littlest one seems just fine today. The fevers off and on yesterday seem to have done their job and burned off most of the virus. She won’t even nap today, she’s feeling so feisty.

My biggest little one is a different story though. Her bad daddy took her out last night against doctor’s ( orders and now she is ONE VERY SICK little person. Poor baby. AFTER the baby medicine, her fever is a tad over 100F. Nothing freaks you out or makes you feel more helpless than your little person being sick. But over the last hour she seemed to be a bit hungry and just a minute ago she was asking how much longer she had to stay laying on the couch. That’s a good sign.

SickcropOn the upside today, the sun is shining brightly and its warm glow is streaming in thru the windows. The wind isn’t blowing and the house is actually cozy and warm inside. Always a good thing.

Jan08_038And, as an added bonus, my happy little flower is blooming in the window today. Nothing like flowers in the dead of winter to remind you that life is full of unexpected little happy miracles.
