So….Begin. Yes, Again.

Today I’m thinking about how scary endings are. Life is constantly full of blind turns and crests and precipices that you cannot see beyond. A lot of times it looks like the road is dropping off into a chasm just up ahead. But sometimes, when you get to it…..it just curved a bit so it was actually only out of sight. We worry so much about the future. The dark, scary unknown.

And when it is a true friend that is facing down the giant monster of a great unknown and unseeable future, it is somehow harder. Because you can’t drive their life for them. Only they can be behind the wheel. You can only watch from the sidelines and wave a flag here and there of encouragement, hoping to catch their eye. I even envy their opportunities to begin again, after their world has come crashing down around their ears. Being on the outside looking in, I can mentally skip over the soul crushing heartache that is still ringing in their ears and blocking out everything else. Because all I can focus on is that glittering, shining sunrise about to come up over their horizon…… and it makes me jealous. Just a teeny tiny bit jealous. But still….

But I digress…..today I was thinking about new beginnings….and I found a few quotes that I felt mirrored my mood of hope at those new beginnings….

“And finally of course, there are times that are cold, and cutting and empty, times when the spring of new beginnings seems like a distant dream. Those rhythms in life are natural events. They weave into one another as day follows night, bringing, not messages of hope and fear, but messages of how things are.”

There is also, of course, the old cliche by Seneca: “Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.” Somehow, hearing it in a pop song on the radio every other day seems to nullify the ring of its truth. I hate that.

I thought this was a really beautiful thought and it sums up nicely the feeling I get when I am lonely. I feel disconnected from friends and family and the world in general. My thoughts turn dark and negative and selfish. (“the one isolating himself will seek his own selfish longing”) Very true. This is a more poetic expression of that same thought:

This quote really spoke to me in a way that sort of touched a nerve…

If you are extremely blessed, you have at least one of two people in this world who would be willing to drop everything at a moment’s notice to come to your aid. These kinds of friends are rare indeed. And I can quantify the number of people I care deeply about by comparing them to this measuring stick….would I drop everything right this minute if they called????
